About East Harling Social Support Group

We are still a very new Group formed inJuly of last year.

We meet at the Rudd Room at the Harling Sports and Social Club- Wednesdays at 10.30am until 12- 12.30.

It was felt that a local group was needed, for people who are not so mobile, and wouldn't necessarily meet the criteria for statuary services. The Group is self led and all decisions are made in consultation with its members. It has a committee of three consisting of Chair person, Treasurer and Secretary plus deputies and has a Constitution. At present there are approx 20 members of varied ages from 18 upwards. It is particularly valuable for different generations to have the opportunity to mix and explore common interests. The members have varying degrees of mobility but encourage able bodied people to join in their activities. This will we hope lead to a better understanding of the isolation that can be felt in rural communities such as ours.

Our Aims

We aim to provide social support for a few hours each week and take part in some form of social inclusion. We also want to try and Highlight Discriminatary Rights. We would like to be involved with other like minded groups, with a view to joining in outings for educational and recreational purpose.

We are now longer supported financially by the DDW. They have gradusally weaned away gradually weaned their assistance from us but we know that if we are in need of help and advice they will be there for us.Our thank are due to Lynn and Diane for attending and supporting us We aim to have at least one speaker or an event every month and so far this is being achieved. We also have managed to take part in a variety of activities such as crafts and Art and Movement to Music. We have all broadened our horizons since joining the Group and hope that we can continue to do so

Recent Happenings

11th June - Wayne Rawlings , who is the Practise Manager at the surgery in East Harling, visited us with his pharmasist and his assistant. He provided the Group with many answers to questions that they had previously put to him, via our Secretary , on their behalf. He gave a very good insight to his work and the problems that they face on a day to day basis. We all agreed afterwrds that we are very lucky to have such an excellent service from our Dr's and staff at the surgery. Wayne has asked if he can return to us in Jan/February next yesr for updates etc.

25th June - David Went from East Anglia Childrens Hospice visited us and gave a very interesting Talk. We are now able to send our old used ink cartridges to him with the envelopes they provided. The Group presented David with two soft toys for EACH to raffle or do with what they wish.

25th 26th 27th June. - Some members were involved with arranging flowers in Harling Church for the Wedding Festival held over the weekend. It proved to be both enjoyable and successful for the church. Many visitors came to our village over the weekend.

28th June -We also held a Wedding themed Fund Raiser in the Rudd Room on the Saturday.

Members set to on Friday evening setting up stalls for Tombala and Raffle and Bric a Brac and a Wedding Themed Table with photographs and memorbelia and we had 3 lovely Wedding Dressess on display as well.We had a free to enter wedding themed Quiz which helped to increase the fun aspect.there were small prizes for the winners.

We also ran the Silent Auction which was a huge success and raised quite a ot of money for the Group.

July-

11th - Harold Locke was due to visit and give part 1 of his slide show about Old Harling with part 2 due following Wed. but unfortunately Harold has been quite poorly and in hospital so we had to postpone his show until he is well.

Fortunately Jean Ashworth one of our members stepped in and gave us a class on how to make a greetings card. Excellent therapy and we all produced a passable card. Many Thanks to Jean.

23rd - We were very fortunate to have Diana Strevens come and take us throught Gentle exercise to Music. Great fun and enjoyed by all.

24th - Some members went on a boat trip on the Broads from Potter Heigham. Another successful trip out and enjoyed by all who went.

30th - We had an extraordinary business meeting to decide whether or not the Group should continue to run. Members had been given notice of this 14 days prior to meeting. Our Chair person and Deputy Chair ahd resigned so it was decided to hold a meeting to see what the majority of members wished to do. Roy Kemp our Breckland Councellor very kindly chaired the meeting as an independant person.

Some members were unable to attend due to holidays or illness but had sent statements to make their wishes known.

Roy Kemp opened the meeting by saying he had been interested in the Group from very early on and was very impressed by the way it was so professionally run and thanks were due to an excellent Treasurer and Secretary.

Secretary gave her report followed by

Treasurer who then gave her report. - Group is an a good financial state but we cannot afford to be complacent as most of our finance is tied to being used for specific items as stated under the Grant Award rules

Roy then asked the question 'did the Group wish to continue?' and before he could ask for a show of hands, every member present voiced their approval. He then asked for show of Hands and it was unanimous to continue - apart from one member who abstained as she was no longer going to come. She had joined as carer to her husband who now has sadly had to go into care. She has promised to keep in touch.

Propoosls were made- 1 That we have a review at the end of Fiscal year 31st March - that was a 'yes'.

Proposal - 2 - That we elect a temproary Chair to stand until the AGM.Roy Verral had offered to stand if no one else wished to do so. No one volunteered, so

Jean Ashworth nominated Roy Verral and Brent Crompton seconded.

Proposal - 3- Where funds are raised above and beyond the requirements for running the Group, that the elected Committee discuss subsidising Group outings at Committee before bring to Group to discuss. ( Xmas lunch was mentioned as 1 item that all members can take part in)

Motion carried by all.

Donations

. George Prodromaou very kindly donated £100 to our Group as he couldnt manage the time to get to the Silent Auction. Many thanks George. George is our local horse trainer and has offered to sponsor the Group with the proceeds from a horse race in February at Fakenham Races.

We have been unable to take up the offer of the computer that was donated to the Group.

The Group could not justify financially the expense of the PAT test that is required. We would only be able to use the computer rarely and will never be able to link up to the internet. Linking to the internet would have been a worthwhile cause for us pay for PAT testing.

===Good News===

O2 It's your Community Award Have awarded us a grant of £500, this is very welcome . this is for educational needs and will go towards Speakers and Ceramic Pottery Painting and other such educational pursuits.

We have had grants from Co-op . East Harling Fuel Allotment Trust and Harling 300 Club and O2 its your Community.

Norfolk Community Foundation have funded our venue for the next 3 years and our Movement to Music classes. for one year .We are still waiting to hear outcome from other applications.

We have booked to go to Thursford Christmas Concert in December. trips are sponsored by Harling Fuel Allotment Trust for this year on a one only basis. It cost approx £350 to pay for a coach so trips are difficult at present unless we raise more funds.

Harling 300 club awarded us £150 toward equipment for our Movement to Music sessions which will start in July. We have almost obtained all the the equipment needed.(When we have all the equipment then the award will be made)

Co-operative grant for £450 was awarded for educational development of the group. Web site management and writing, press advertising /local adverts for publicity for fund raising.Hopefully trainging for First Aiders /First Aid Kit/ food Hygeine training and any other needs for Group develpoment.

WE still need to fund raise, as we have the day to day running of the group. Anyone who is involved with running groups will be aware just how costly this can be, Paper ,ink, advertising, phone calls all take money and our awards that we have had are for specific things and do not cover the running costs. We are not a group that wants to sit around and talk about our problems, we want to get out there and do things.

At the same time we realise that we are a SUPPORT Group and we are all available to each other on the end of a phone, when someone is lonely and needs a listening ear.

We are hoping that our local surgery is supporting us and refferals will be forthcoming. Some are being given by DDW's and many other people are starting to realise that as a group WE ARE HERE TO STAY

.
