Norfolk kids get larger than life with giant playbook award
Norfolk RCC are running an innovative project, promising exciting opportunities for children of all abilities across South Norfolk to enjoy stimulating new play provision right on their doorstep, receives over £144,000 from the Big Lottery Fund.
The award is part of BIG’s Playful Ideas programme, which funds new projects that provide free access to innovative and creative play.
Bringing youngsters together in some of Norfolk’s most isolated areas, Norfolk RCC- Our Big Book of Games project will develop a series of larger than life 'Play Books' as durable fixtures in ten community green spaces across South Norfolk. The books will contain text and graphics describing a range of traditional outdoor games and ideas for youngsters to devise new activities for free and integrated play.
The project will also encourage the wider younger community to get involved in self-directed play through a special interactive website, featuring downloadable versions of the artwork online where youngsters can design and post their own ideas for games.
The scheme, which will also involve the recruitment and training of ten new volunteer play rangers, aims to help reduce the fear of bullying and enable young people to understand and enjoy the Play Books.
Jon Clemo, Chief Executive said
Norfolk RCC is very pleased to be awarded a grant for the innovative Playful Ideas Project Big Lottery Fund. The project involves children not only in the activities, but also in the planning and interpretation of the games. Older people will also provide insight into the types of traditional games played by them, thus bringing the generations together and developing longer-term understanding between them. The website will encourage wider involvement and help spread the project beyond the 10 sites to be developed with the funding.
Jonathan Clarke, Big Lottery Fund Head of Region for East of England, said:
“I am delighted that Norfolk RCC has been awarded funding. This project is an excellent example of how Playful Ideas funding is working to provide innovative and stimulating activities, increase well-being and positively contribute to the physical, emotional and social development of the region’s children.”
