Norfolk Closures
In Norfolk the Area Planning starts in Jan 08 with the development of the plan and the 10 week investigation period together with Postwatch and engagement with Sub Post Masters. Public Consultation starts end of March 2008, with MPs being informed of closure proposals one week prior to this.
Our understanding is that Post Office Ltd will inform every sub post master of the intended outcome for their branch – whether it is no change, a closure, or they have identified that sub post master as a potential core- during the pre-consultation stage of the area plan.
It is important that the District Councils liaise with both Postwatch and Post Office ltd prior to January to ensure that the Local Development Framework and all local considerations that would influence the minimum requirements set out by the government in May are taken into account.
In addition, closures will apply to Urban as well as Rural areas

Government Issues Response To Post Office Consultation
Trade and Industry Secretary Alistair Darling has confirmed that 2,500 post offices in rural and urban areas will be closing. The report is available at http://www.dti.gov.uk/files/file39479.pdf
Closures will take place over a 12 - 15 month period and are planned to be completed by the end of 2008.
Greater account needs to be made of transport, access to key Post Office services, local demographics and the effect on local economies.
The report also highlights the importance of community run shops and states that the government will ecourage such operations where they are seen to be viable. We made strong representation to Westminster over this opportunity and it is rewarding to see that this has been taken on board.
The NRCC is currently leading the way, working with a number of communities throughout Norfolk to develop solutions to the problems of closures. We are in discussions with Postwatch and Post Office Limited and are looking at innovative ideas to ensure social inclusion and all of Norfolk's MPs are supporting us in our work.
