From 1 July 2007, virtually all enclosed public places and workspaces in England will become smokefree.

Hiring agreements

Community Building may wish to adjust their hiring agreements to take account of the new act. One suggesting wording could be:

“Under the Smoke-free (Premises and Enforcement) Regulations 2006 this building is designated no smoking. It is the hirer responsibility to ensure that smoking does not take place on the premises for the duration of hire. The hirer is liable for any breach of the regulations during the period of hire.”

Signs

The regulations will require all smokefree premises (e.g. all village halls)to display a no-smoking sign in a prominent position at each entrance that:

  • is at least A5 equivalent in area (148mm × 210mm - 5.8inch × 8.3inch)
  • displays the international no smoking symbol in colour, a minimum of 70mm in diameter
  • carries the words in characters that can be easily read: "No smoking. It is against the law to smoke in these premises." The words 'these premises' can be changes to the name of your venue.

A sign displaying the international no smoking symbol only (in colour, minimum diameter 70mm) is permissible in the following two cases:

  • Where an entrance is for staff only (on the basis that there is at least one other sign on the premises meeting the full requirements above)
  • Where the entrance is located within other smokefree premises (e.g a shop within a shopping centre or a parish council office within a village hall)
