Step 1d: Bringing it all together Bookmark and Share

In Step 1 we have:

  • told everyone what we are up to
  • sorted out a steering group
  • explored different ways of recording, sharing and collaborating on 'the project'

The final thing to do is make sure that you have an idea of how you are going to bring these things together and manage the project and resources.

In terms of putting information together you may want to think about some practical issues. making documents is going to involve text and pictures and maps, so it is worth exploring how you are going to do this and finding solutions to any problems you may come across as part of deciding how to manage the whole project.

Copying and pasting maps

One of the problems you may come across is that, whilst you can create lovely personalised maps in Google maps there is no obvious way of copying and pasting your map into a document. Here it is worth learning (what may be) a new trick.

If you have a graphic, a picture or map that you can see on screen but you don't seem to be able to paste into your document you can actually copy a picture of the screen itself and paste that in instead.

While copying pictures from an online resource often just involves 'right clicking' on the picture and 'saving as', if this doesn't work, try this:

  • get the picture onscreen in a window (whether that's in internet explorer or whichever piece of software)
  • next, resize what's in the window so that whatever picture or map you are looking at on screen inside that window is as big as possible without being cut off; then,
  • hold down the 'ALT' key (usually to the left of the space bar) and press the 'PRINTSCREEN' button (often shortened to Prt Sc and usually on the top right of your keyboard)
  • you have now copied a picture of the window into your computer's memory
  • next, find somewhere to paste it - if you need to get rid of unwanted bits of the resulting picture you'll need to paste it into a picture editor - like 'Paint' - the picture editor that comes with Microsoft Windows ® and crop it to the right size.

Now it's time to move to the next stage and start finding, collating and sharing information using what you have learned.
