Hindolveston Village Screen
From Norfolk RCC
Hindolveston's own Electric Cinema!
Film shows in Hindolveston Village Hall have always been to a very high performance standard - but when the new season of films kicked off in September 2009 with the eight-Oscar award-winning "Slumdog Millionaire", moviegoers were knocked out by the huge improvements.
The village now has its own cinema screen, projector and sound system. And they're bigger, better and more state-of-the-art than the kit they'd been borrowing!
Until then, every film show put on in the hall had required two or three village volunteers to commandeer a suitable van, trek over to Dereham to load up the borrowed equipment, bring it back, set it up in the hall; then dismantle it and take it back again next day – several hours work over two days!
Now thanks to a Norfolk Community Foundation's Grassroots Fund £5,000 grant, the village hall has bought its own equipment. The management committee decided to add another £1,500 to get an optimum package, including a 3.5 metre electric screen that can be raised or lowered at the touch of a button, and a better projector and audio system.
The Grassroots Fund is geared to supporting local projects which enhance the quality of rural life, and support for village activities was a key to then Village Hall Management Committee chairman Mary Beek's robust advocacy to the fund's administrators when she applied for a grant.
She told them: "The village has a strong community spirit but virtually no resources. The shops, school, public houses and Post Office have all closed over the past 10-20 years. The village hall is therefore the major recreational resource and meeting place for the village, and the management committee strives to ensure that it responds flexibly to the changing needs of the community and remains a well used facility."
She pointed out that as the hall is now over 120 years old it is showing its age, and any cash reserves – and any surplus income for several years to come – will be needed for ongoing restoration work.
"For the past three years, Village Screen supported by Creative Arts East has proved an extremely popular social occasion which has become an important opportunity for both entertainment and companionship", said Mary.
You can see it all and judge for yourself by coming to one of the films in the Village Screen autumn programme. Tickets are £4.50. Doors open at 7pm for the 7.30 shows.
The hall's licensed bar will be open, and ice creams will be on sale.
Film shows are on the third Saturday of each month. Tickets can be bought on the door or pre-booked by calling 01263 860583 or from Parker's Garage in The Street, Hindolveston.
